It is possible, in deep space, to sail on solar wind. Light, be it particle or wave, has force: you rig a giant sail and go. The secret of seeing is to sail on solar wind. Hone and spread your spirit till you yourself are a sail, translucent, broadside to the merest puff.
Annie Dillard, Pilgrim at Tinker Creek (1974)

The perfect way to start this day. Thank you, Jack.
I just really like her work. Pilgrim is the best.
That’s beautiful and refreshing.
Dillard hits so many notes I like. Wish I had had a writing seminar with her. Yet, I had Worcester of TCU. Great writer.
Oh, but I looove this quote. Sometimes, when I’m walking in the woods near us and the brisk air makes me pull my jacket tighter and the leaves crunch below, I feel like I’m sailing on solar wind.
Dillard is such a fine writer. She makes connections that most of us never contemplate. Kittie, I’m glad you have a woods to walk in.
